New Twitter Rollouts Expand Outreach and Connection

What started as a simple text-like message has evolved into an online canvas for individual expression. Earlier this year, Twitter added the ability to poll a community and view Periscope broadcasts right in a Tweet (without the app), as well as search out GIFs for creative posting. The newest updates allow you to do even more.

According to Twitter, the changes “simplify Tweets including what counts toward your 140 characters,” freeing up the limited space to be as crafty as you choose.

Here are the key changes that will make the most of your messaging:

•  Replies – @names will no longer be counted toward the 140-character limit. This allows you to have easier, more pointed conversations without scrimping on words and ensuring they reach an entire group.

•  Media attachments – Media such as photos, GIFs, videos, polls or Quote Tweets will no longer count as Tweet characters, giving you more space for words. Similar to @names, the media links won’t count toward the character limit.

•  Retweet and Quote Tweet yourself – Twitter is enabling the Retweet button on your own Tweets to share them over and over. Or Quote Tweet yourself, resurrecting an older Tweet that didn’t get the play you originally hoped for.

•  .@ convention – This convention will no longer be needed, simplifying the rules surrounding Tweets that start with a username. New Tweets that begin with a username will now reach all of your followers.

As it delves to understand perceptions of the brand around the world, Twitter is working hard to be where you go when you want to see what’s happening in the world right now. In the announcement about the above features, Twitter also alluded to plans exploring ways that will make existing use easier and enable new uses without compromising the outlet’s unique brevity and speed for live online connections and conversations.
